Guys,

Several pages back I twice made comments along the lines of "And this has what to do with time travel?" I gave up to some extent and engaged Peepo in a discussion about the physics behind a jetliner crash into the WTC - without resorting to personal attacks.

Admittedly, I'm not a Mod here. Roel is the Mod but he hasn't been around for many months. That being said, I also have to add that I communicate with Raul (MOP) on an infrequent basis. Maybe once or twice every four months.

The last time that we had a flame war going on (about four months ago) Raul was somewhat less than amused. He rarely posts and as I recall he didn't post his thoughts then. Still he was not a happy camper/site owner. Forewarned is forearmed. He has every right to shut the serrver down without notice. With both the flame wars going and the fact that his wife's name was dragged into the Titor Saga he was ready to pull the plug without notice.

I don't know how many of the new members here (who are engaged in the battle) are or have been regulars on other TT sites. If you haven't then here's a clue: look around - one by one they are shutting down or have simply become ghost towns. TTI is just about the last active dedicated TT site. I've been a member here for almost six years and I do not want to see this site follow the rest into "history".

The point? If it's not obvious then I'll just say it - knock it off with the flaming and personal attacks. Here are Raul's personal words on the subject in his sticky thread at the top of the list in Time Travel Discussions - "The Topic of Discussion Here Is...":

For the regular members (including old members who have recently returned wioth a new SN) the solution is simple: don't flame and don't respond to flames...period. Talk about the topic at hand and abide by the TOS rules. This act alone should put an end to the war - and keep this site up and running.

If anyone (regulars or newbies) just has to have a fight, well, Raul has another solution...take it elsewhere.

You have made very good points in your post, Darby.

It is possible to have a debate WITHOUT resorting to personality bashing or name calling.
Some of us ARE here to learn and understand. To have this site vanish into oblivion would be a great loss to many.

I know that in trying to discuss the same concepts as presented here, elsewhere, is usually scorned and I receive the sideways "you are insane" glance. At least within these hallways, some people will accept the principles of wanting to know more, and use the opportunity to grow and progress.

It is good to get these thoughts and ideas out in the open, to reflect these ideals with others who also are on a similar path of possible understanding, and to adjust any thoughts accordingly if someone elses thoughts seem more appropriate as one travels onward.

It is ok to have a difference of opinion, to see something differently than someone else, and then present supporting data if there is a difference of opinion, allowing the others to ponder the facts presented and reach a conclusion.

I also like to be challenged on any concepts I am pondering, to be able to take a hard look at them, and evaluate these concepts from anothers perspective.

Many of us here, do want more than a one-liner that disputes any claims? How many of these threads end up following the Monty Python Arguement sketch ?

Once the name calling begins, any points brought up in those posts lose impact they otherwise may have had.

But, what do you suggest we do about it?

Put those culprits who are quick to anger & who start name calling on notice?

I can only imagine what that's going to do for next season?

After all, name calling & discrediting any difference of opinion and/or claim, is what some do best around here.

And anyone who doesn’t allow them selves to be bullied & shut up by this approach, as we have seen on this thread & in others, clearly shows an example of who & what the real problem on this forum really is.

Here's the rub. On an online forum it isn't possible to shout anyone down nor is it possible to bully them - unless they allow it to occur.

Only one person at a time can post and only one person at a time can respond. Unlike a live forum where several voices can drown out a single voice, on an Internet forum there are no actual voices. However what tends to occur is that once a written challenge is issued someone (or several people) get their tail feathers in a dither and feel that their "manhood" (or womanhood) is being challenged. They conclude that they are obligated to respond in kind - and so they do.

But what people don't consider is the obvious: that the site, not the individual, is under assault and that the intent is to bring down the site itself - not the individual.

And that's what I want the regulars to consider. Are the initiators of the flame wars intending to discredit the individuals or is it their intent to bring down the site itself?

I'm not going to offer an opinion. I can only say that the best way to make sure that the latter doesn't occur is to consider the source (usually a relatively new member) and to consider responses accordingly.

Yes, I know that there are many regular members who frequently engage in heated debate with other regular members. There's a big difference, however, between that sort of debate and a debate with a new member. The regulars know each other and even though they might engage in heated debate in public they oft times have a back channel communication (email or PM for instance) where they privately draw reasonable lines. You and I, for instance, have done just that more than once. I've done so with many people. Our agreed upon intent has been to offer divergent and well defended opinions on a single subject for the benefit of the audience. That's perfectly legitimate and no one is going to complain. .

I'm not generally attacking new members in saying this. We need new membership. Not all new members have appeared to have come onto the forum to be chaotically disruptive. But I'm asking you and the other regulars to consider that it might be possible that they are being drawn into conflict by some new members who have alternative motives - that their motives might have less to do with the obvious topic at hand than they have to do with being generally disruptive for malicious purposes.

The long and the short of it is to simply ignore the disruption and only respond to new members in a neutral fashion (and save the heat for those members whom you trust to have seasoned and thick skins /ttiforum/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

We do have the ability to select our words. As Darby pointed out, we can make a choice on how we respond, and to whom. I, too, have fallen into the trap of getting my "tail-feathers" ruffled, and felt that a strong response was necessary.

How many times have I edited my replies, each edit done as my emotional reaction(s) become calmer.

Some of the replies that have brought this discussion about, probably should have been completely ignored. They really didnt merit a response at all.

I believe that if the "ringers" didnt get any nibbles, they may have moved onto a different pond.

It would be nice to have an active moderator in place, but then that has its risks as well.

It may not be a perfect world, and yes, there is alot of hosility floating around, but that doesnt mean anyone needs to buy into it and contribute to its growth.

Accepting personal responsibility for ones own actions, and an awareness of what results may occur when specific action's are taken, is a reflection of one's own evolution...AND...........

Well it looks as if Qronos 16 was right about Art Bell, on Coast to Coast the last 2 weeks Art has said that his life is in great danger since moving to Manila. All because of some note someone wrote. And not to mention the very bad weather in that city.

Nice to see you back on Keke. And yes that's right he did say that, he also mentioned that the stock market would hit 12000 and then some and then crash. The stock market closed at over 11, 800 yesterday. We will see if he was right about all of this.

Also today 10-12-2006 the dow closed at 11,959.63. A new high!! Yes I also would like to see if he is right about all of this.

In another topic, one time traveler mentioned the secret military action taking right now to Iran and it will show up by end of the month and some chain reactions will happen. Not sure if it is related to the stock crash. If all these things happen, I personally believe some real time travelers have come to our timeline.

I honestly think it is the intention of some to bring the site down or try to silence individuals
by intimidation techniques. But if you just stick to the subject and don't respond back to those
individuals they will only be posting to themselves. The conversations can still continue.
You have the right to respond or ignore a post. Nobody says you have to respond to someone who
just comes on to try to upset you or others but does not ever contribute anything meaningful to the time travel topics at hand. It is possible to respond without attacks. Its also possible for you to take control and simply ignore people who waste yours and others time with useless flame posts.

Nothing probably frustrates the attacker more than if you do not respond back or ignore a flame post they have posted and only respond to those individuals you wish to respond to. After all it is YOUR time. Why waste it on individuals who have nothing worthwhile to say? I would say they simply are not worth your time. Anymore I only respond to things that interest me.

A flamer cannot continue if a flame is not fed it simply dies or the person simply ends up posting to themselves.

If someone is being disrespectful to you they really are not worthy of your attention or time.

What if they really happen? Do you 100% believe in time travel or if you want to 'excuse youself' for more evidence to support what you have already believed in your mind? My answer is same as yours, but in opposite direction.

To me it is very suprising why people not believing in time travel is wasting their time in this forum everyday, every topic.
For those people, even if an exact prediction was given to them, they would still have thousand excuse not to accept it as an evidence that time travel may exist or ask for more evidence.
They can win on words but still cannot change people mind, just like people cannot change their mind. Some people believe in God and some don't. This is the way it is. Why can't we accept the fact that people have different views? (you are not going to make them change their mind anyway)
(May be this is one of the reasons why this world may end because there are too many different mind sets in this world)
